The Listening Garden is a sonic salon in Ojai with live ambient, new age & jazz music, immersive audiophile sound, earthly arts & plant life.

Approaching our 6th edition, the quarterly series has hosted transcendent performances by musicians including Ami Dang, Colloboh, Fabiano Do Nascimento, Low Leaf, Matthewdavid, and the trio Surya Botofasina, Nate Mercereau & Carlos Nino.

FRANKIE REYES

Frankie Reyes is one alias of formerly LA-based electronic musician Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker, who now calls Ojai home. Aptly described as a “career experimentalist”, Reyes-Whittaker has also released music as The Abstract Eye, The Reflektor, Gifted & Blessed, and (one half of duo) The Steoples – the last two, along with the Frankie Reyes project, on the Stones Throw label.

Two albums to date have led an exploration of Reyes-Whittaker’s Puerto Rican heritage, reinterpreting popular music from Puerto Rico circa the turn of the 19th century with a minimalist setup comprising an Oberheim synthesizer, a MIDI sequencer, and an effects pedal, with hauntingly evocative results. Pitchfork described the project as “an experiment that magnifies every note… unexpectedly unravelling traditions as he updates them.”

Gabe will perform pieces from the Frankie Reyes catalog along with an exclusive preview of forthcoming, as-yet unreleased, music.

TURN ON THE SUNLIGHT

Multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Jesse Peterson is the heart and constant thread of the musical project Turn On The Sunlight, responsible for an ongoing series of records that Peterson has made since 2010 with a community of close collaborators including his beloved wife, Mia Doi Todd, new age luminary Laraaji, and percussionist and producer Carlos Niño.

Jesse has been described as a “catalyst for and caretaker of advanced togetherness where an array of adventurous musicians and creative artists are featured atop and intertwined with his swirling foundations and welcoming arrangements”. For this very special show marking summer’s arrival, Jesse is joined in performance by the vocal wonder Mia Doi Todd, saxophonist/clarinetist Pablo Calogero, percussionist Andres Renteria, and guitarist Hiro Makino. Expect a perfect mixture of folk, ambient, spiritual jazz and peaceful open space improvisational flow.
